PHOENIX - Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton got a little too close to the action during the Phoenix Mercury practice session on Monday.
An official with the mayor's office said Stanton got his nose broken while playing with the team during a morning practice.
Stanton was showing off his basketball skills when the mishap occurred.
"Went up 4 rebound against @PhoenixMercury's Nakia Sanford, came down w/ broken nose & I still had a great time," tweeted Stanton.
The mayor is said to be an avid basketball fan and submitted a video on PhoenixMercury.com on why he should be given a chance to play with the two-time champions.
The Mercury will return to action following the 2012 Olympics.
