PHOENIX - Matt Leinart's days are numbered with the Arizona Cardinals. Why? Because the coaching staff has lost confidence in his ability to lead this team.
Sure, Leinart has decent numbers this pre-season, but there's more to leading a team than statistics.
Leinart doesn't seem to have what it takes to lead, and it appears his teammates have lost confidence in him. At least that's what we're hearing from multiple sources.
Fact is, the coaches have had more than enough time to evaluate Matt Leinart. When you consider the fact that this is his fifth season, fourth under coach Whisenhunt, it's easy to see just how much practice time he's had and opportunities he's had to impress the coaches... but he hasn't!
At least not enough to put this quarterback controversy to rest. And that should tell you all you need to know about the situation. When coach Whisenhunt says the decision will be based on an entire body of work he's talking about the last four years with Matt Leinart, not just this pre-season.
And in three plus years, as a coach in the NFL, you should know all you need to know about a player.
When Kurt Warner retired, coach Whisenhunt gave the job to Leinart. He apparently was expecting more than what he got. Leinart had an entire off-season to show the coaches, the team, and the front office that he could lead. Apparently, he failed.
Again, this isn't about stats... stats tell you just one piece of the story. Believe me, the coaches know all they need to know to make this decision.
Unfortunately, we haven't been to every practice, every meeting, every film session and every workout to know what's really going on, so I'll leave this decision to the Cardinals coaches.
Knowing coach Whisenhunt, he'll make the best decision for this team and its fans! Given what he's accomplished in his first three years, I have no reason to doubt him.
