Miss the game? Check out highlights from the hottest high school football games around the Valley Friday, August 30.
Saguaro vs. Chaparral:
The biggest game of Friday night was the between Saguaro and Chaparral in Scottsdale. Saguaro forced to punt on their first possession, but it’s blocked and Chaparral recovers it in Sabercat territory.
Three plays later, Malcolm Thomas finds the end zone to take an early 7-0 lead.
Elijah Castro made it a 14-0 lead on a quick run and Chaparral beats their crosstown rivals, 52-27.
Desert Mountain vs. Brophy:
Desert Mountain with the best quarterback-receiver duo in the country between Kyle Allen and Mark Andrews.
Brophy doesn’t allow Desert Mountain to score in the first half, while Desert Mountain holds Brophy to just two field goals.
Brophy beats Desert Mountain, 13-6.
Cesar Chavez vs. Mountain Ridge:
In the Northwest Valley, Mountain Ridge hosted Cesar Chavez.
Andre Ruiz hands the ball off to Kevin Stone and he’s in for the touchdown to give Cesar a quick 7-0 lead.
But Mountain Ridge comes back in the second half to get the win 30 to 13.
Marcos de Niza vs. Horizon:
The Padres against the Huskies at Horizon High School on Friday. Huskies quarterback Sneed Dalton bobbles the ball and is forced to run. He goes 20 yards and sets up a touchdown pass to Marciniak Spencer to give Horizon a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Marcos quarterback, Joshua Eckley, hits Jake Lagunas in the end zone. Lagunas made the catch one-handed and was a contender for ABC15’s “Play of the Night." That ties the game at seven.
But the play of the night would come in the second quarter when Dalton found Salinas Kristian for 53 yards and the touchdown.
Marcos would go on to win this high scoring game, 56-53.
The most shocking outcome was the loss from Desert Mountain against Brophy. Kyle Allen and Mark Andrews were unable to get it done. However, we expect head coach Tony Tabor to turn things around. This is a playoff team.
