Don't say goodbye to the Fiesta Bowl because Glendale has been selected to the College Football Playoff that begins with the 2014-2015 season.
However, Glendale won't be hosting the championship game. That goes to Cowboys Stadium. Arlington, Texas edged out Tampa, Fla., in the bid to be the site of the first title game in the new playoff system on Jan. 12, 2015.
The final three sites for the semifinal rotation goes to The Cotton Bowl which is also played at Cowboys Stadium, the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta and the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale. The Rose, Orange and Sugar bowls are already part of the semifinal rotation.
The 12-year deal breaks down like this:
On Jan, 1, 2015, the Rose and Sugar will host the first semifinals.
On New Year's Eve of 2016, the Orange and Cotton bowls will host.
Then in 2017, the Fiesta and Chick-fil-A bowls will get their turn.
In the first two seasons of the new system, the Fiesta Bowl will host highly-ranked teams from a mix of conferences on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.
In the new format, the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl will no longer have a conference tie-in. Participating teams will be assigned by a yet-to-be-named selection committee, which will consider numerous factors, including a school's proximity to the bowl site to ease travel for fans. The committee will also seed the playoff participants.
However, just because the Fiesta Bowl will host the semifinals on a rotation basis, it does not guarantee the right to host a national championship game. That comes in a separate bid process. The Fiesta Bowl does plan to bid for that game in the future.
