PHOENIX - It’s time to recognize Title IX for what it is and what it’s been: The best piece of legislation ever produced when it comes to equality in the athletic arena.

Look, I’m old enough to remember the days of “no girls allowed” when it came to sports. It was a “man’s world,” no question about it! In fact, it wasn’t even an issue… until Title IX!

And now, forty years later, we’re finally moving closer to gender equity and in particular, equity for women in athletics! I wish we could say we’re already there, but I think we can all remember the story this Spring about Paige Sultzbach.

Paige is the freshman girl who plays baseball at Mesa Prep…on the boys team! But instead of her team being able to play in this years State Championship game, “Our Lady of Sorrows” (their opponent) forfeited the game rather than face a female on a “boys” team.

Won’t it be nice when things like that just won’t matter? Won’t it be nice when we can all celebrate the successes of athletes regardless of their sex?

You keep playin’ girls and keep kickin’ some serious butt!

That’s Fouhy on Sports!
