After winning seven of their final nine games to close out the 2011 season, the feeling was that the Cardinals would put together a decent 2012 campaign with a healthy Kevin Kolb at the helm...unfortunately we all know how that worked out.

Even if the Cardinals finish this season out strong with wins against the Bears at home and on the road against the 49ers (don't count on it) the 2012 season has to be seen as a disappointment on several levels.

So the question now becomes, what's next? Needless to say changes need to be made, and item number one for Rod Graves (or whoever ends up assuming the GM position) has to involve the future of Ken Whisenhunt as the head coach of the Cardinals.

In Whisenhunt's six seasons leading the redbirds the team is 45-49, including the franchise's only Super Bowl appearance in 2008 where they lost to his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-23. But in this "what have you done for me lately?" era of sports we currently live in the big picture usually gets overlooked, and the present/recent past of the Cardinals paints a very bleak outlook for his future with the team.

Unfortunately, Whisenhunt gets unfairly blamed for most of the Cards' failings this season, but there's one situation with every football team that the head coach can not mess up: the quarterback position; and Whisenhunt's handling of that position this year might ultimately be the reason he losses his job.

Let's be real here, Kolb has had his ups and downs, but when healthy he hasn't been awful, just not what the Cardinals were hoping when they traded for him. John Skelton on the other hand has to go. I don't think he's done anything to prove that he's anything more than a third string NFL quarterback.

The future of Ryan Lindley is uncertain, but there's no doubt that the handling of the rookie by Whisenhunt and offensive coordinator Mike Miller has set back his development quite a bit.

The decision will ultimately be up to the front office, but tell us what you think by going to Craig Fouhy's Facebook page and casting your vote in our poll.
