LUBBOCK, TX - Jonathan Gilling scored 18 points on a career-high six 3-pointers to lead Arizona State to a 77-62 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.
"I think I shot under 50 percent even though I made six, so everything wasn't falling," said Gilling, who was 6 for 12 on 3-point attempts and 6 of 15 overall. "But we've been working on shooting in practice. It felt good today, and we've just got to keep working."
Jahii Carson also scored 18 for the Sun Devils (10-2).
"He's a tremendous player," Arizona State coach Herb Sendek said of Carson. "He plays with a lot of poise and composure. We all feed off his penetration and his energy."
Gilling carried the load in the first half, hitting five of his 3-pointers, and Carson took over after the break with 16 second-half points.
Carrick Felix added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Sun Devils, and Evan Gordon had 12 points.
Jaye Crockett led the Red Raiders (5-4) with 11 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Tolbert and Josh Gray each added 10 points.
Arizona State led by 15 points with a little over nine minutes left in the first half before the Red Raiders fought back within four just minutes into the second half. The Sun Devils extended the lead back to as many as 17 with 2:32 left in the game.
"The score at the end of the game isn't indicative of how close it was," Sendek said.
Saturday's matchup at Texas Tech was the first road game for Arizona State this season.
Gilling's family traveled to Lubbock all the way from Denmark to watch him play and he did not disappoint, helping the Sun Devils shoot more than 50 percent (14 for 27) from the 3-point line.
"Arizona State had 14 threes; it would be hard for a lot of teams to beat them tonight," Texas Tech coach Chris Walker said.
Arizona State made 10 3-pointers in the first half to jump out to a 15-point lead. Gordon hit 4 of 6 3s before the break.
The Red Raiders struggled from long range, going 3 of 13. Only Dusty Hannahs was able to hit from beyond the arc. Making his first career start, Hannahs was 3 for 7 from 3-point range and finished with nine points.
Arizona State scored 14 points off of fast breaks, while holding Texas Tech to only two. The Devils also scored 16 points off of turnovers in the second half and limited the Red Raiders to six.
