Arizona All-America running Ka'Deem Carey had a protection order issued against him stemming from an incident before Christmas, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the protection order hadn't been made public.

Carey was issued the protection order after allegedly being involved in an incident Dec. 23.

No other details were available. Online searches in city and county records for Carey's name showed no pending court dates.

"I've spoken with Ka'Deem and am aware of the case," Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said in a statement Sunday. "We take these matters very seriously and will support the authorities however we can. Once more specific information is available, we will act accordingly."

A local standout from Tucson's Canyon Del Oro High School, Carey was the FBS rushing leader this season with 1,929 yards and had a school-record 23 touchdowns on his way to becoming Arizona's 11th consensus All-American.

He had 172 yards rushing in Arizona's dramatic 49-48 over Nevada in the New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 15, falling just short of becoming the 16th running back in NCAA history to reach 2,000 yards in a season.

"The university and department of athletics are fully aware of the situation," Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne said. "This is now a matter for the local authorities and we will fully cooperate and assist them as needed. At this point we will have no further comment."
