GLENDALE, AZ - If you're keeping score, it's John Skelton: 1, Kevin Kolb: 0. Bottom line is Kolb is hurt once again, and Skelton led the team on a 14 play, 89 yard scoring drive. Enough said!
Do you need more proof that Skelton is now ahead in the competition? How about this? Skelton finishes pre-season Game 1 four of 6 for 32 yards and a 79.9 Quarterback Rating. Kevin Kolb finishes 1 of 4 for 4 yards with one interception and now he has to recover from a bruised rib (on top of the bruised thigh he suffered last week in practice).
I have to admit, I was clearly in Kolb's camp, believing that Kevin would win the battle simply based on what the Cardinals gave up to get him and the fact that he's been around the league for a few more years that Skelton.
But I was wrong! Skelton continues to hang in there and play well enough to end up being the starter. It's now his job to lose, but I do wish one of them would step up and make this an easy decision.
To keep things in perspective, it was just a few years back that Kurt Warner got booed off the field at University of Phoenix Stadium. And Warner ended up leading the Cardinals to the Super Bowl. So I think it's fair to withhold judgment until we see a little more from each of them.
Perhaps Skelton is simply a "gamer." Perhaps Skelton just enjoys games a whole lot more than he enjoys practice. And maybe, just maybe, Kolb just can't stay healthy. After all, he's not played in more than nine games in any of his previous five NFL seasons.
But no matter how you slice it, the biggest question remains: Are either one of them worthy of being called a "Starting Quarterback" in the NFL, or are we watching a battle between two guys who would be better suited as "back-ups" in this league?
Time will tell! That's Fouhy on Sports!
