PHOENIX - While you probably will be focusing on the teams playing in the Fiesta Bowl, hundreds of other college students will be vying for your attention.

Both bands from Oklahoma and Connecticut have made the trip across the country to show off their talents during the Fiesta Bowl.

“I know we’re not the team, but we’re treated like the team,” said Caitlin Tate, co-captain of the Oklahoma Sooner color guard.

Members of the Sooner band will have familiar faces. Oklahoma has come to the Valley twice in recent years to play in the Fiesta Bowl, losing both times. For the band, it’s more about representing the school than it is the final score.

“The Pride is here to support the Sooners, regardless what happens at the game,” said Matt Sumner, who has participated in the Sooner band for five years.

On the other side, Connecticut is eager to prove itself on a big stage. For many of the band members, the experience of a BCS game is about more than just football.

“You can’t have a bowl game without the band and you can’t have a bowl game without the football game,” said Michelle Garcia, a member of the UConn band.

Both sides have had to battle weather conditions to get to the Valley.

“Got on the plane at 3:30 this morning, flew over, got off the plane and came to work,” said David Mills, band director for the University of Connecticut.
