PHOENIX - Lawyers for an Arizona death-row death inmate are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block his scheduled execution Wednesday.

Lawyers for Richard Dale Stokley argue that lower courts didn't adequately consider possible grounds for leniency in sentencing.

The state wants to execution to go forward. A prosecutor says a response will argue that courts did consider pre-sentencing evidence submitted on Stokley's behalf.

Stokley was sentenced to death for the 1991 murders in rural Cochise County of two 13-year-old girls -- Mandy Meyers and Mary Snyder.

Another man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killings. He has been released after serving 20 years in prison.
