PHOENIX - Protecting your kids from dog attacks isn’t just the job of the pet owner.
Shannon Blizzard with the Arizona Animal Welfare League says training needs to start at home. In face she says it should begin before the child is born. It’s your job to make sure your dog is prepared for baby.
Tips for parents expecting a baby:
1. Bring home a baby blanket from the hospital with baby’s scent
2. Get a recording a baby crying to help pet adjust to sound
3. Start any training or re-training of pet BEFORE the baby comes home
a. Jumping on people
b. Getting on furniture
c. Barking at the doorbell
She also says you should set up any baby equipment before the baby arrives. This will allow the dog to get used to the new surroundings.
Once your child is older, you need to train them to be safe around dogs they don’t know.
Tips for kid/dog safety:
1. Children must be taught that all dogs are not friendly and may not be safe for petting
2. Always ask for permission before petting someone’s dog
3. Never reach over the dog’s head to pet them
4. Never run away from a loose/unleashed dog
