PHOENIX - A newly filed lawsuit contends an initiative measure to transform Arizona's primary election system is unconstitutionally broad and should be kept off the November ballot.
The lawsuit filed Monday contends the measure is too broad because it'd change laws on a range of subjects, including political parties, campaign finance and voting rights.
Plaintiffs include a Republican former elected official, the League of Women Voters of Arizona and a Libertarian Party activist.
The measure would allow voters to vote for any primary election candidate. The top two finishers would advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation. That's a change from the current system in which each party's nominee advances.
Initiative campaign spokesman Joe Yuhas says backers are confident they'll preserve the right of voters to decide the measure's fate.
