PHOENIX - Valley centers are seeing an increase in visitors as many Arizonans struggle to feed their families.
Aracely Zamora, a 20-year-old mother, said she went on food stamps last year before the birth of her daughter.
"I was the only one working in my family," she said. Zamora said she had to provide for her mother, brother and sister.
Whether it's food stamps or seeking out food at shelters, many families struggle to get food.
According to the Rio Vista Center, 32 percent of all Phoenix families are dealing with a hunger hardship.
"You can just feel their heart wrenching, that they have to do this," said Debbie Allen with the center.
Allen helps those in need fill out paperwork for food stamps. The center also provides food once a month for families who need an emergency supply.
Allen said since the beginning of the recession, the center has been busier, with an increase in people looking for food.
She's pushing for more awareness to be brought to the issue of hunger in the Valley and nationwide, and hopes one day hunger doesn't plague thousands of families, and she and her colleagues aren't needed.
"That is definitely the goal, that we don't have a job anymore," she said.
Zamora may be proof a solution is possible. She is now off food stamps and has plans to go back to school.
"Have an education and go to college," she said.
