PHOENIX - A New Jersey-based company is voluntarily recalling close to 75,000 bags of dog treats over fears they may be contaminated with salmonella.
Hartz Mountain Corporation is recalling 74,700 8-oz bags of Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs, lot code BZ0969101E, UPC number 32700-11519, which were imported by Hartz from a Brazilian supplier, said a Food and Drug Administration release.
Random sample testing by the FDA did indicate the presence of Salmonella.
Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, the release said.
According to the FDA, Salmonella symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea in both dogs and humans. Anyone experiencing the symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek immediate medical attention. Owners of dogs exhibiting these symptoms should also seek veterinary assistance.
“You get what you pay for when it comes to pet food,” said Jeff Hesser, a veterinarian at Alta Vista Veterinary Hospital.
Hesser encourages pet owners to buy what he called “healthier alternatives.”
The biggest drawback is the cost, he said.
Hesser typically recommends all-natural foods especially in Arizona, where dogs have a significant amount of allergy problem.
“Natural foods don't have as much filler and ingredients that can upset a digestive track and can lead to itching,” Hesser said.
Hesser switched his dog Maizey to an all natural diet at home.
She goes to the bathroom less; her coat is fuller and shinier and she itches less, Hesser said.
He said patients who put their pets on natural food diets, typically come back and talk about the positive benefits they see in their dogs.
Read the FDA release to find out more information.
