PHOENIX - Governor Jan Brewer is taking new measures to combat a rise in the number of credit card "skimmers" found around the Valley.

Brewer urged the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures to increase their inspection efforts in looking for the "skimming" devices.

In the past six months, the Department has received an increase in calls from law enforcement agencies across the state regarding the devices.

Beginning immediately, the Department will take new steps in an effort to better protect consumers. They will:

-Increase the amount of inspections at gas pumps.

-Increase training for investigators on the latest technology and how to best detect "skimmers."

-Implement new training seminars

-Update inspection procedures for "skimmer" detection as part of routine vapor and fuel inspections.

"Skimmers" are illegal devices that can copy information from your credit or debit card. These devices can be attached to an ATM machine or gas pump and are difficult to detect. Criminals can use the information to steal your identity and create counterfeit credit and debit cards.

You can find additional information regarding safety tips on gas pump skimmers by visiting www.azdwm.gov .
