TUCSON, AZ - Republican challenger Martha McSally made a surprise late rally Tuesday night to take the lead in the 2nd Congressional District race against Rep. Ron Barber.

McSally grabbed the slight lead late in the night as Barber's evening-long lead eroded with each new batch of ballots.

Outstanding early and provisional votes could take days to count and Barber said in a statement he trusts Southern Arizona voters and will watch as ballots are counted.

McSally says she's not surprised by her lead.

Barber was considered the favorite in the race. Voters picked him to replace former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in a special election in June. He was running for a full term in the reconfigured district.

McSally is a former Air Force pilot making her first run for political office.
