SUN CITY, AZ - A new plan is in the works to put solar panels on every rooftop in Arizona.
But first it’ll have to get on an Arizona ballot.
The Go Solar in Arizona Initiative needs to collect around 175,000 signatures in hopes of creating a new state-wide system of solar energy and trade.
Organizers say it will lower energy costs, create jobs and make solar panels affordable to just about everyone.
“It won’t take long for everyone to want it,” says Robert Hoskins, spokesman for the initiative. “If we can get it passed it will create money and jobs and Arizona will have the cleanest air to breath.”
Sun City resident Steve Freehill doesn’t need convincing. He put solar panels on his roof recently and says he starting saving money immediately.
“It was cash flow positive from the first month,” he says.
Freehill says his monthly electric bill used to be more than $130 a month on average, now they are about $8.50.
It cost him $19,000 to put the system in with the help of a few incentives.
He says it will pay for itself in about six years and comes with a 25 year warranty.
