Colt Single-Action Army Revolver named state gun

PHOENIX - Arizona now has an official state gun: the Colt Single-Action Army Revolver.

“It’s the gun that was used to settle the west,” said Dave LaRue, owner of Legendary Guns in Phoenix.

LaRue noted the historical importance of the gun in Arizona. He said it was often used in battle before Arizona became a state and was seen at the time as an advancement in firearm technology.

This law is just one of many Governor Brewer signed this legislative session. She has until Monday to sign or veto the remaining bills on her desk.

“The question is can she give each of those pieces of paper on her desk the proper attention,” asked Mesa Community College Political Science Professor Brian Dille.

Dille believes the biggest issue to come from this legislative session is an active attempt to reduce the budget deficit. He cited measures such as pulling funds from other programs and cities as ways the legislature shortened the budget gap.

“I think [Arizonans] will look back on this session as the beginning of a conversation about the budget,” he said.

Other big measures Governor Brewer passed into law this session include one that would give married couples preference when adopting a child over single adults. Another measure she approved allows her to establish an Arizona state guard when deemed necessary.

Key vetoes by Governor Brewer this session include the veto of a bill that would require presidential candidates to prove U.S. citizenship before appearing on the state’s ballot. She also vetoed another bill that would allow guns on college campuses.

For LaRue, the naming of the state gun could have a big impact, as he noted it could potentially bring in additional business.

“I think it’s a neat little niche,” he said. “I’m sure it’s going to increase it’s appeal to people who might not have considered it before.”
