PHOENIX - Arizona leaders are reacting to Washington conservative's new stance on immigration reform.
House Speaker John Boehner said that a comprehensive approach is long overdue. He wants to find common ground with the President.
“I hope they have the guts to replace him as speaker,” said Russell Pearce. “Immigration reform is amnesty. It’s a cop-out and a slap in the face for those who came here the right way.
Congressmen Jeff Flake released a statement saying: "I have long felt that Republicans need a more realistic and humane approach to immigration reform, one that recognizes our labor needs and does not assume that we are going to deport 12 million people. Speaker Boehner's statement reflects that reality."
Governor Jan Brewer is also reacting, asking for Washington to worry about border security first.
“I have a simple request for the President and Congress: Secure our border first. Demonstrate that you take seriously the safety concerns of Americans living in the border region," she said. "With that completed, we can pursue – together – ways to fix our Nation’s broader immigration system in a fashion that is effective, practical and humane."
Dreamers said they are happy about the bipartisan efforts but believe actions will speak louder than words.
Congress expects to take up the issue of immigration reform this coming session.
