PHOENIX - A bill headed for Gov. Jan Brewer's desk and her expected signature would ban chemicals used in herbal blends to make synthetic marijuana.
The Senate's unanimous approval of the bill Thursday completes legislation action that included House approval last week.
The legislation targets fake marijuana known variously as "Spice" and "K2."
The federal Drug Enforcement Administration has issued a temporary ban of some of the 10 chemical compounds targeted by the Arizona legislation. A legislative briefing memo says 11 states have already passed their own laws and that 21 states are considering legislation.
Supporters of the Arizona ban say the synthetic pot has dangerous side effects that vary among individuals, making it an unpredictable threat to public health and safety.
