PHOENIX - The state of Arizona wants to put an end to veteran homelessness, and the Department of Veterans’ Services has put together an action plan to make it happen.

The state says it must first develop a system to identify the most chronically homeless and vulnerable veterans, then fund what they call ‘bridge housing’ so those most vulnerable can be placed there immediately, instead of going out on the streets.

The next step in the state’s plan is to increase the capacity of the Temporary Help System, by making the process to get help a quicker one. In order to do that, the action plan calls for an increase in the speed and access to entitlement income, and a boost in opportunities for competitive employment.

The state’s final goal in the action plan is to prevent homelessness among veterans altogether. They believe this is possible by tracking veterans’ status and connecting them to additional resources, before it’s too late.

The plan will be showcased at the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans conference in Washington D.C. this week.
