PHOENIX - A new bill in the Arizona legislature aims to prevent students from dropping out of high school.
House Bill 2747 would require students to attend high school until they are 18 years old or have graduated. Currently, a student can drop out when they turn 16.
"People need at least a high school degree to compete in today's society," said State Representative Chad Campbell, one of the bill's sponsors.
According to the latest statistics, in 2009 more than 13,000 students dropped out of school before they attained a high school diploma.
President Obama urged states to adopt a law requiring students attend high school until they turn 18 in this year's State of the Union Address. Arizona legislators tried to pass a similar bill in recent years but it failed to pass.
Some parents don't quite agree with the bill, saying if students who don't want to attend school are forced to, it might cause a problem.
"It could be a disruption for the children that want to be there," said mother Karen Adams.
