9/11 remembrances around the Valley

PHOENIX - Flags will be flown at half staff around Arizona as we remember the events of September 11, 2001.

Around the Valley, several cities are holding their own events to honor those who died in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon.

Mesa: At 7 a.m. there will be a short program at the Mesa Urban Garden located at 212 E. 1st Avenue with Mayor Scott Smith and District 4 Councilmember Chris Glover. Volunteer will place garden boxes with soil at the site and at 8:46 a.m. work will stop for a moment of silence to remember the victims of 9/11.

Scottsdale: The reading of the names of those who lost their lives begins at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11. The 9-11 Remembrance ceremony and candlelight vigil begins at 6 pm. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

Tempe: Sea Life Arizona is offering FREE admission to member of the military and first responders. Just be sure to have your military or occupation ID at the admissions counter to receive the discount.

Tempe Healing Field: At 5:46 a.m. a brief ceremony will be held that will include a presentation of colors, music, prayer and the reading of the names of the first responders who gave their lives. At 7 p.m. there will be a ceremony that includes a candlelight vigil with music, prayer and guest speakers.

Glendale: Thousands of free roses will be given out at the Tulip Tree on the southwest corner of 59th Avenue and Bell Road. It is part of "Pass it On Day" as a way to give members of the community a way to remember the events of 9/11 and reach out to each other.

Chandler: A steel beam from the ruins of the World Trade Center will be dedicated Tuesday morning at 8:40 a.m. 151 E. Boston Street.

Phoenix: Mayor Greg Stanton and others will lead an event that begins at 9:30 a.m. at Phoenix City Hall in the Atrium under the Stairs.

Avondale: The American Red Cross is holding a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at American Sports Center, 755 N. 114th Avenue.
