PHOENIX - I love social media. If you know me, you know that. I'm on Twitter every day, I'm always checking Facebook and constantly checking in on Foursquare. It has become a great way to stay connected to people in my life who I simply wouldn't communicate with on a regular basis otherwise. The problem is, it's getting to be too much. I think I'm suffering from a bit of social media overload.
Maybe you can relate? I find myself checking my Facebook page at the most unusual times throughout the day. I can't go to bed or wake up without seeing who has posted what on my wall. At work, there's always a tab for Facebook and a tab for Twitter open on my web browser. The same can be said about my home PC. If I'm on the couch, my smartphone or tablet is in my hand and I'm checking for updates. I can't go out to dinner or to the store without thinking, "I need to check-in!" Should I slow down? I'm just beginning to get into Google+ and Instagram. I haven't touched Pinterest yet but I think it's in my future.
I need balance. I need a better way to have fun on social media but also know when to shut off the stream. I think admitting the problem is the first step. Now it's time to take the baby steps to put my smartphone down at the dinner table, in the living room and, yes, in the restroom. Remember when we used to read the newspaper in the restroom? Perhaps I'll go back to that.
What do you think? Is social media taking over our lives or is it just a matter of how our world is changing the way we communicate?
Ignore everything I just said for a few seconds and hop onto my Facebook page or Twitter feed and let me know what you think.
