MOHAVE, CA - After a successful flight test Wednesday morning, Virgin Galactic is gearing up to start commercial space flights in 2014.
The SpaceShipTwo (SS2) performed a full scale flight for the first time at 8 a.m. this morning after lifting off at Mohave Air and “Space Port.” The aircraft flew up to 69,000 feet and a maximum speed of Mach 1.43.
The flight lasted just under an hour and a half and the pilots reported a flawless flight.
H.E. Khadem Al Qubaisi, chairman of aabar Investments PJS, says the completion of this flight brings the group much closer to their goal of “commercializing access to space for the broader public.”
One of the more intriguing features of the spacecraft is the “wing feathering re-entry mechanism” that acts as a safety mechanism during descent.
The SS2 is a rocket-powered, passenger carrying vehicle owned by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and Abu Dhabi’s aabar Investments PJS.
