SURPRISE, AZ - Photo radar vans will be set up at several spots around Surprise over the next few weeks.
Drivers may want to slow down or possibly get a ticket in the mail.
The fines depend on how fast a driver is going but Surprise police Sgt. Norm Owens said tickets can cost roughly $200 or more.
If you have never seen one, here's how it works. Photo radar vans are mobile units and typically look like an SUV with lights and cameras attached. They are marked.
If your photo is taken, a notice will be sent in the mail. Typically, a warning and speed limit sign will be posted ahead of the parked location.
Some opponents of photo radar have suggested these programs are designed as a moneymaker for municipalities but Owens tells me the goal is to reduce accidents.
"It's all about keeping people safe and making sure everyone's obeying the law," Owens said.
