SURPRISE, AZ - Surprise police confirmed they have arrested two people in connection with a fatal shooting early Monday morning.
One man died and another was airlifted to a hospital after the shooting inside a home near Greenway Boulevard and Grand Avenue.
Surprise Police Sgt. Mike Donovan said they arrested Stephanie Conley, 28, and Jesse Gillen, 28 who police believe were involved in the shooting.
Authorities said a neighbor called 911 after hearing shots fired around 1 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found two adult men injured on the ground outside the home.
One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, they other was flown to the hospital in critical condition.
A car sitting in front of the home clearly advertised that the man living there was in the medical marijuana business. Donovan confirmed the homeowner is a licensed medical marijuana grower and the suspects knew what they were coming for.
Rebecca Barrientos, who lives around the corner, said she knew the homeowner. "He was a nice guy," she said.
Barrientos said she believed the homeowner may have been the victim because his car was parked outside the home.
Barrientos said the homeowner sold medical marijuana for a living and rented his back house to a friend.
Barrientos, a mother of two young children, said she hadn't been concerned about the neighborhood until now. There was another unrelated shooting less than a mile away on Sunday.
"I'm worried about my kids," she said. "They need to be able to play outside."
Police have not released the names of the two men.
Police are still investigating specifics and the possibility of an additional suspect.
The State Department of Health Services does not release the names of certified medical marijuana patients or growers addresses to the public. Many municipalities however do require those involved with industry register.
