SURPRISE, AZ - Authorities say two teenagers were injured while hiking in the White Tank Mountains in the West Valley Sunday afternoon.

Rural Metro Fire Department spokesman Colin Williams said the two 15-year-olds were brought out of the area by helicopter.

Williams said the female has a leg and arm injury and the male has a wound and break in his leg.

They were treated by firefighters at the scene and airlifted to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

"We've got trees, cactus, rough terrain, and very few flat spots so it was a tight little canyon. The pilot was able to maneuver his way into this little canyon and we had enough of a flat spot to get the ship in and safely land it," said Tim Medlock with MCSO Mountain Rescue.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said the brother and sister were hit by a 300 pound boulder near the Goat Camp trail around 12:15 p.m. Sunday.

Maricopa County Sheriff's spokesperson Brandon Jones said that the two were hiking off trail when a rock came loose and rolled over the boy and struck the girl.
