SURPRISE, AZ - The Arizona Department of Transportation has opened three new southbound lanes of the Loop 303 in Surprise.
The section of freeway opened Monday. It runs from Grand to Peoria avenues as the Loop 303 continues its transformation into a six-lane freeway.
Drivers have temporarily used the northbound lanes of the upgraded freeway for two-way traffic while crews were building the southbound lanes in that area.
Northbound Loop 303 will continue to have only one traffic lane for approximately two months until a layer of quieting rubberized asphalt can be added in September.
Rubberized asphalt was recently added to the new southbound lanes.
The work is part of a $129 million project to improve Loop 303 into a six-lane freeway between Grand and Peoria avenues by this fall.
