YOUNGTOWN, AZ - Authorities say a Youngtown man is accused of child abuse after his 5-week-old son suffered multiple broken ribs.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say 19-year-old Benjamin Joseph Cooper is jailed on suspicion of one count of child abuse.

Cooper told authorities that he squeezed the crying child while trying to swaddle him in a blanket, then heard a popping sound.

Authorities say Cooper also told them that he accidentally dropped the child in a bassinet and the infant hit his head on the crib.

The incidents allegedly occurred Oct. 12 and 13 in Cooper's home.

The Arizona Republic says a social worker at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center notified authorities after the infant was treated Tuesday for dehydration and a bruise on his cheek. Medical staff saw the broken ribs on X-rays.
