911 call released in suspected Sun City 'mercy killing' involving George Sanders and his wife

SUN CITY, AZ - As an 85-year-old Sun City man faces a first degree murder charge, the 911 call that prompted deputies to race to the couple's home has been released.

"He shot her, he just called me and told me he shot her," said the woman who identified herself as the 81-year-old victim's caregiver.

George Sanders is suspected in the "mercy killing" of his wife Virginia.

According to court documents, on the day of the shooting, Virginia was told by a doctor that she had what appeared to be gangrene on her foot and needed to be admitted to the hospital.

The documents go on to say Virginia didn't want to be admitted or be taken to a nursing home.

Virginia was shot in the head with a .22 caliber revolver.

Deputies found the woman seated in her wheelchair in her home and still breathing, but she later died.

"Her husband just called me, I took her to the doctor and they were going to admit her," said the caregiver to the 911 operator. 

During the seven minute call, the caregiver tells the 911 operator that she is on the way to the Sanders' home after receiving the call from George.

"Do you know what kind of gun he has," asked the operator. 

"A revolver," answered the caregiver.

George Sanders was arrested shortly after deputies arrived on the night of November 9.

According to court documents, Virginia's last words to George were reportedly: "Do it, do it, do it."

"He called me and said it's over," said the caregiver describing her conversation with George to the 911 operator. "And I said what are you talking about, he said Ginger doesn't want to have her toes cut off, she begged me and I shot her."

Deputies found George on the front porch of the home and took him into custody.

George reportedly told detectives that his own health was declining and he had a pacemaker implanted days earlier.
