PEORIA, AZ - Peoria Police Department Sergeant Patrick Kief has been demoted and suffered a pay suspension after being accused of using a racial slur.
After an investigation, Peoria Police acted after an April incident where Kief used an inappropriate term while describing a podium he was using for a shift briefing.
Other officers were around when he used the racial slur.
"The statement of Officer Patrick Kief was reprehensible and is something that will not be tolerated from any one of our city employees," said Peoria City Manager Carl Swenson in a news release.
According to police, Peoria Police Chief Roy Minter said Kief's actions were "highly inappropriate."
During the investigation, Kief, who has been with Peoria Police for 19 years, was on restricted duty and has since been demoted from patrol sergeant to officer.
He also served an 80-hour unpaid suspension.
Kief reportedly acknowledged that his conduct was inappropriate.
