PEORIA, AZ - Three cars have been targeted by burglars in different church parking lots in and near Peoria over the past five weeks, police said.
According to Peoria police Lt. Richard Scrivens Jr., the suspects took garage door openers and vehicle registrations from church-goers' cars while they attended services.
The thieves then drove to each victim's home, parked their vehicle inside the garage, shut the garage door and burglarized the home.
According to Scrivens, the suspects tracked the service times, so they knew how long they could spend in the homes.
Scrivens alerted residents to lock their glove boxes and carry their garage door openers with them.
"Remember, we cannot control a suspect's desire or ability to commit a crime. However, we can control their opportunity by taking a few extra steps and not leave valuables or garage door openers within your vehicle," Scrivens wrote in an email.
The alert does not name the churches that were targeted, but most of the churches in Peoria are aware of the issue.
