PEORIA, AZ - A 16-year-old has been arrested in connection with a murder at a West Valley home early Friday.

A Peoria police spokesperson said the teen came forward as officers were investigating at the home of 39-year-old Steven Gibson.

Gibson's wife called police around 2 a.m. after finding her husband dead inside their garage. The home is located in a cul-de-sac in the Thunderbird Vista neighborhood, near 75th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

Gibson had obvious signs of trauma, according to Peoria police spokeswoman Amanda Jacinto. It's not clear if he was shot, stabbed, or how he died.

The victim's son-in-law earlier on Friday morning also identified him as Steve Gibson. Jonathan McGonagill said Gibson was his wife's stepfather and an auto mechanic in town.

McGonagill said he found out about Gibson's death by watching the news.

"My wife was freaking out so we drove to see what was going on," he said.

McGonagill said they hadn't seen her stepfather in about two weeks.

Police had earlier on Friday detained the teen as a person of interest in the case. According to officials, after interviews with detectives, the boy is now facing murder charges for Gibson's death.

A motive in the murder has not been identified and detectives believe the teen acted alone.

Jacinto previously confirmed the person of interest is not related to the family.
