PEORIA, AZ - Police say two people are in custody and another suspect is in the hospital after getting shot in the leg by a home invasion victim in Peoria.
According to Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson, officers were called out to a report of a person shot near 33rd Avenue and Van Buren Street around 2:30 a.m.
A man was found shot with non-life threatening injuries, Thompson said. A man and woman at the home were taken into custody.
Thompson said at that time, Peoria police contacted Phoenix to let them know they were investigating a home invasion.
Phoenix police officers then determined the shooting and home invasion were linked based on descriptions.
Peoria police spokeswoman Amanda Jacinto said the investigation started after an officer was flagged down by a couple around 1 a.m. near Grand and 83rd avenues.
The man and woman said they were victims of a home invasion and had several injuries from being assaulted, Jacinto said.
The couple reportedly said two men came into their home while they were asleep near Olive and 95th avenues. Their 5-year-old child was also asleep at the time.
The two suspects were a 23-year-old man and 19-year-old man known to the couple since they have hung out a few times before, Jacinto said.
The suspects were armed with guns and assaulted the victims while demanding items from the home, according to Jacinto.
At some point, the male victim grabbed a gun from one of the suspects and reportedly shot him in the leg. The two suspects then left the home and drove away with a 26-year-old woman, Jacinto said.
The three were later found by Phoenix police after they called 911 to report the 23-year-old suspect’s gunshot wound.
Jacinto said the 28-year-old male and 23-year-old female victims went to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Peoria and Phoenix police continue to investigate. No names have been released.
