LAVEEN, AZ - Police say an 18-year-old man was shot and killed while walking to a McDonald’s restaurant Monday night in Laveen.
The victim, Dewight Westbrook, met up with his girlfriend near 51st Avenue and Baseline Road around 9:30 p.m. just before the shooting, said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.
Westbrook and his girlfriend were heading southbound on 51st Avenue from Vineyard, and two friends were walking ahead of them, Holmes said.
That's when they were approached by a young male suspect, and the suspect shot Westbrook several times.
Holmes said Westbrook's friends ran for safety and called 911.
The suspect ran away. Westbrook was taken to the hospital where he died.
The friends were only able to describe the suspect as a black male wearing a dark-colored "hoodie".
Holmes said the investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-948-6377.
