GOODYEAR, AZ - A Valley freeway is threatening to drive one family out of their home.

Erceline and Alice Redwing live next to the I-10 and Perryville Road in Goodyear. The Arizona Department of Transportation wants to add an interchange at that location, however the Redwing's home is in the way.

"I've lost a lot of weight and I just don't sleep right and I'm worried constantly," said Alice Redwing. She and her husband have owner their home for 11 years.

The Redwings told ABC15 the state appraised their home at $48,000. With other money, including moving costs and a price differential payment, the Redwings could receive a total payment of around $80,000. Since the family took a second mortgage on their home, they still owe more than $140,000.

"They can have the property, we just want them to move our house to another acre and a quarter, just replace what I've got," said Erceline Redwing.

Both parties met in court Wednesday. The state is yet to officially acquire the land, but a judge is expected to allow the acquisition to take place in coming weeks.

ADOT denied ABC15's request for an on-camera interview, but they did release the following statement:

“Under Arizona law, ADOT can only pay what is determined to be the fair market value for properties purchased for highway projects. Our programs can also assist qualifying homeowners with relocation and moving costs. However, the law does not allow us to pay negative equity amounts. ” -ADOT Spokesperson

The Redwings can work with the state to help them relocate and a final settlement has not been reached. Both sides are due back in court March 2nd.
