GOODYEAR, AZ - An investigation is underway after an Arizona prison inmate died.

An official with the Department of Corrections said 19-year-old Forrest Day was pronounced dead at West Valley Hospital from a possible suicide after medical responders attempted life-saving measures.

Day entered the Lumley Unit at Perryville in Goodyear in November 2010 and was serving 3.5 years for child abuse, officials said.

In 2009, Day pleaded guilty in the drowning death of her 18-month-old son after she said she left him alone in a bathtub with running water for 15 minutes. She was given a sentence of seven years probation but violated some of its terms and was ordered to serve prison time.

"I love my son and what happened to him was a mistake and one that I will regret for the rest of my life," Day said in court.

Day's death is under investigation by the Department of Corrections.
