Election results: Proposition 457 that would remove sales tax increase in Glendale rejected

GLENDALE, AZ - Glendale Proposition 457, which would have taken away a temporary sales tax hike, was defeated Tuesday, meaning the city will not have to cut millions from the budget.

Supporters of the measure wanted to repeal the temporary sales tax increase, saying that the money has not been spent wisely.

Opponents of the measure argued it would have resulted in $22 million in budget cuts to the city that would have eliminated firefighter and police officer jobs.

"We just want to thank the citizens tonight for understanding the issues and truly getting behind us and having the commitment to public safety they both deserve and expect," said Joe Hester representing Glendale firefighters.

As of Wednesday morning with 81 percent of precincts reporting, the measure was defeated by 66 percent of the vote to 34 percent.
