GLENDALE, AZ - The Glendale Police Department has released the name of the Phoenix police officer involved in a shooting Sunday afternoon.

Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs said Officer Nickolas Gombar and a Phoenix arson investigator were visiting a residence near 70th Avenue and Colter to question a suspect about an arson investigation.

During the questioning, the suspect reportedly came after Gombar with a broken jagged-edge glass in his hand.

The officer felt threatened and fired his weapon, hitting the suspect in the abdomen, Coombs said.

The suspect is reportedly hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The suspect's identity is expected to be released in the next few days.

He is being described as a white male in his twenties.

Police have not said what charges the suspect may be facing.
