EL MIRAGE, AZ - An El Mirage man has been arrested on child abuse charges after he allegedly injured his 5-year-old son.

El Mirage police say 29-year-old Derek Sarber was arrested after the boy's mother reported the child had severe bruising from a spanking.

Police say the boy had been with Sarber for visitation and when his mother picked him up and returned home the boy complained his buttocks hurt.

The mother found severe bruising on the boy's buttocks and arm.

The 5-year-old reportedly told his mother that his father had spanked him because he could not spell his name correctly.

The boy's mother filed a police report and took her son to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.

Sarber was arrested on Thursday and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count of child abuse.
