Fatal accident causes closure of Interstate 10 in West Valley

BUCKEYE, AZ - Interstate 10 is open after one person was killed in a collision west of the Valley.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the accident happened in the backup of an earlier crash involving two cars near Verrado Way around 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

In that accident a 35-year-old man was driving with his wife, mother-in-law, and daughter eastbound on I-10 in a Honda Accord when an argument broke out, according to DPS.

The driver pulled over to the side of the road and the mother-in-law and daughter were reportedly told to get out of the car.

DPS said the driver then sped off with the wife still inside the vehicle at an extremely high rate of speed.

The driver allegedly hit a Suburban which was traveling eastbound, causing it to roll over.

Five children inside the suburban were ejected from the vehicle and sustained significant injuries. At least two of those children remain at Phoenix Children's Hospital in serious condition as of Wednesday afternoon, but are expected to survive.

The driver of the Honda Accord suffered serious injuries and has been admitted into a hospital. When the driver of the Accord is released, he will be booked into jail for multiple criminal charges to include Aggravated Assault as a result of the crash.

DPS said the name of the suspect will not be released until he is either booked into jail or charges are filed with the Maricopa County Attorneys Office.

At 11:45 p.m., just 45 minutes after the previous wreck, a fatal crash occurred between three semi trucks and four passenger cars.

DPS said a semi truck carrying furniture crashed into another semi that was stopped in the back up from the first crash.

The crash between the two semis reportedly caused them to be pushed into four other cars and an additional semi truck.

The semi carrying furniture caught fire immediately after the initial impact killing the driver.

As a result of both of these wrecks, Interstate 10 was closed at Miller Road from 11:45 p.m. to 11:45 a.m.
