AVONDALE, AZ - An Avondale man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison in connection with the killing of his friend.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 34-year-old Locy Mendoza-Smith was sentenced Friday to a 22-year term for second-degree murder and another two years for concealment of a dead body.
Mendoza-Smith was convicted in September of murdering 40-year-old Karl McIntosh and then concealing the body in the trunk of a car that was found in Glendale in June 2010.
Investigators believe drug activity contributed to the murder in which McIntosh was shot several times at Mendoza-Smith's home.
Neighbors reported seeing the car parked in front of a vacant home for several days, prompting a call to police.
Officers smelled an odor coming from the car and found McIntosh's body inside the trunk.
