TEMPE, AZ - Nine years after the attacks of September 11th, parents who remember that day so vividly are bringing their kids to the healing field in Tempe.

For the 7th year, nearly 3,000 flags are set up at Tempe Town Lake in remembrance of the victims of September 11th.

The memorial not only helps us all remember that day, but its goal is to bring meaning to a new generation not even alive in 2001.
"This is a very emotional day, I was actually pregnant with Lucas, my son over there, when this happened," said Wendy Kauffman.

For mothers who visit the park like Wendy Kauffman and Sandy Simmons, it's not only a time to remember, but a time to teach.
"I thought it was important to bring my kids out to the flags," said Kauffman.

"My girls are now 5 and 6 so that's kind of time to teach them about what happened," said Simmons.

The kids might not understand everything that happened that day.
"I'm sure it will take him a while to process it," said Kauffman.

But the kids are learning.

"A plane crashed into New York City tall buildings," said Simmons's 6-year-old daughter Mattie.

"I think it was pretty sad," said Kauffman's 8-year-old son Lucas.

"Each of these people were a father, a mom, a grandparent, a brother, a sister, and they fully understand that," said Kauffman.

"Were here to read about some of the people who died and pray for them and their families." said Simmons.

It’s all teaching the next generation of Americans to never forget.
