TEMPE, AZ - Tempe police say the number of fake IDs seized by officers, bars and restaurants in the Downtown District rose last year over the previous year.
According to a Tempe Police Department news release, between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 a total of 2,247 of the fake IDs were taken from underage people trying to get into liquor establishments.
That was up slightly from 2,064 seized in 2010.
Police say the top three locations in the Downtown District for seizing false identifications in 2010 were the Mill Avenue Cue Club, Vintage Lounge and Grill and Zuma Grill.
Officers reportedly found the state identification most commonly used fictitiously is Arizona, with California and Pennsylvania at second and third.
Police say they provide continuing training to the downtown establishments about what to look for and recent trends when it comes to spotting fake identifications.
Police say those caught using a fake identification could be arrested and fined.
