TEMPE, AZ - Police evacuated apartments in Tempe while SWAT teams attempted to negotiate with a burglary suspect barricaded inside one of the units.

Tempe police spokesman Michael Pooley said when police tried to approach the suspect, he ran into the apartment near Broadway and Price roads.

Officers said the man was refusing to come out of the apartment. They were not sure if he is alone, or if there was anyone inside the apartment with him.

SWAT team members were able to negotiate with the man to surrender.

As a precaution, authorities evacuated nearby apartments.

The man was taken into custody after a smoke bomb was fired into the apartment.
