TEMPE, AZ - The parents of an 11-month-old boy who nearly drowned in the tub at a Tempe motel earlier this month are now facing child abuse charges.

Tempe police Sgt. Steve Carbajal confirmed 23-year-old Summer Dawn Angelly and 28-year-old Jasen Anchondo were arrested Friday following an investigation into the August 5 incident.

According to Carbajal, crews responded to the Days Inn motel that morning after the infant's 4-year-old sister found him lying in the tub under the running faucet.

Angelly reportedly ran to the motel manager's office after finding the boy unresponsive. Carbajal said the facility manager went to the family's room with a phone and immediately called 911, taking CPR directions from the dispatcher and helping to direct crews to the room.

The 11-month-old was transported to a local hospital where he stayed for several days. According to Carbajal, the boy was released on August 10 and is expected to make a full recovery.

During an investigation into the near drowning, Angelly and Anchondo reportedly gave conflicting stories about the incident. Angelly later admitted to lying about what transpired.

Carbajal said the infant had soiled his diapers and was placed in the tub under the running water. Both parents admitted to leaving their son unsupervised in the bathtub.

Court records state that the couple was arguing over money while the child was alone.

According to Carbajal, the pair had fallen asleep and was awoken by the boy's 4-year-old sister, who said her brother was "asleep in the tub."

Police called in Child Protective Services, who has taken over care of the couple's other children, a 4-year-old daughter, 2-year-old son, and twin 11-month-old son, since the incident.

Investigators stated Ecstasy pills were confiscated and that Anchondo is possibly a drug addict.

Angelly and Anchondo are charged with one count each of child abuse.
