TEMPE, AZ - The Tempe City Council is the next in Arizona to take on the issue of civil unions for same-sex couples.
The town of Bisbee had just passed an ordinance earlier this week, allowing same-sex unions.
The council members met with legal advisers Thursday evening in an executive session, so they won’t be able to disclose what goes on.
But Councilmember Kolby Granville said depending on what happens in the executive session, he may try to make it a regular agenda item coming up in the next few weeks.
Erika and Shannon Cardenas, a same sex couple who had a wedding in 2010, said what is happening in Bisbee and Tempe is really about hope.
"It is a first step," said Erika.
Meanwhile, Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne will go to court to block the artists' community of Bisbee from implementing the newly approved ordinance, his office said Wednesday.
Horne's office will file its planned lawsuit "in the coming weeks" before the ordinance approved Tuesday night by the Bisbee City Council takes effect in 30 days, Horne spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said.
The council approved the ordinance on a 5-2 vote during an overflow meeting after three hours of emotional testimony by residents of the former mining town in mostly rural southeastern Arizona.
