TEMPE, AZ - A woman who was reportedly dragged by a vehicle driven by a man who had robbed her early Wednesday has died.
Tempe Police Sergeant Steve Carbajal said 21-year-old Kyleigh Ann Sousa, an ASU student, was pronounced dead Wednesday night at 9:30 p.m. as a result of her injuries.
Officers responded to a call that a female had been run over in the area of Apache Boulevard and College Avenue around 1:50 a.m.
Carbajal said Sousa was approached by a heavy set Hispanic male in a newer model silver Chrysler 300.
The suspect allegedly grabbed Sousa's purse and attempted to drive away.
Sousa, who was holding on to her purse and the suspect vehicle, was dragged for a short distance before the suspect left the scene.
She was transported to a local hospital and later died.
Sousa works as a server at Tavern on Mill. Her co-workers are currently trying to set up some kind of fundraiser to help.
"She is a wonderful girl," said manager John Ambriz. "We've had nothing but good times and we're hoping for more good times to come."
The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information to release at this time.
Anyone with any additional information on this incident is encouraged to call Tempe police at 480-350-8311 or Silent Witness 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377).
